PostgreSQL Weekly News - November 15th 2004

This week was fairly quiet as folks prepared for a beta5 offering, which you can expect early this week. Unless something suprising comes up, beta5 will probably be the last of the beta releases before an official "release candidate" is put out, so keep a close eye on things and get ready to test any applications you haven't already tested.

Given the slow week, we have only a handful of changes to report this week. Probably the biggest change was that the GUC Userlimit variable category was removed, changing the affected variables to plain SUSET instead. The planner was changed to now fold "stable" functions to constants when forming selectivity estimates. The postmaster startup process was smartened up to better detect when it is safe to restart after boot. Initial support for localization of the windows installer was committed, with a partial translation into German having already been done. And, last but not least, the documentation on the overall filesystem layout used by PostgreSQL was beefed up.
